Long Man

The Long Man site is not public land and the SE Area Committee have to purchase a license from the landowners to fly there each year.
This cost is covered each year by 2 area clubs – East Sussex Soaring Association and Slope Soaring Sussex.

Therefore if you want to fly the Long Man site you will have to become a member of either ESSA or Slope Soaring Sussex club.

ESSA have primary tenure over the Long Man and here are their flying rules –

ESSA FLYING RULES AT LONG MAN

The East Sussex Soaring Association (ESSA) manage the Long Man site (map) which is available to all BMFA members. On the map above , the flying area is called Windover Hill. Parking is in the road called ‘The Street’ to the right as you go up the road.

FLYING AND CONDUCT

  • Members are required to fly their models with care and consideration for other members and models, members of the public and animals.
  • Members involved in any accident involving flying model aircraft must not admit liability and should report the facts of the incident, with names and addresses of persons concerned to the (ESSA) Secretary without delay.
  • Motor vehicles must not be driven up the tracks to or on the downs and parking must be in recognised areas.
  • All gates must be closed at all times and extreme care exercised when negotiating fences.
  • Fences should not be climbed if there is a gate or stile within reasonable walking distance.
  • Whenever possible, models must not be landed in growing crops and great care must be exercised when recovering models not to cause damage to crops or trespass on private property.
  • Public footpaths and bridleways must not be obstructed.
  • No litter or model debris to be left at flying sites.
  • Frequency to be clearly displayed on the transmitter. Only EVEN numbered frequencies to be used at all times on 35mHz.
  • A frequency peg board system will operate at the discretion of the pilots on the day. The peg corresponding to your frequency must be removed from the board and fixed to your transmitter. If the peg is not on the board then it is already in use. Pegs must be returned to the board after use.
  • Transmitters MUST NOT BE SWITCHED ON until the peg is obtained.
  • Transmitters MUST BE SWITCHED OFF before the peg is returned.
  • Flying to be restricted to area adjacent to bridleways.
  • Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you use the NE slopes, which overlook Folkington.
  • When landing at crowded sites or where public footpaths have to be overflown, get another member to accompany you, to assist in looking out for people, cattle and horses.
